Formula 1 will return to Africa in 2030 with a Grand Prix in Rwanda.

(PRIMASPORT) BUGESERA Formula 1 will return to Africa after more than thirty years of absence thanks to a ten-year agreement reached with Rwanda to host a Grand Prix from 2030, marking a major expansion of the premier motorsport category.

The race will be held on a new permanent circuit in Bugesera, about 40 kilometers south of Kigali, near the new international airport. Designed by former driver Alex Wurz, the track will exploit the natural elevation changes to offer a unique and technically challenging route, with privileged observation points for spectators.

The last Formula 1 race held in Africa was in 1993 at the Kyalami circuit in South Africa, won by Alain Prost. Since then, the continent has been absent from the calendar despite several attempts to return. Rwanda now represents a new growth opportunity for Formula 1, which aims to consolidate its global presence by including all inhabited continents, targeting a maximum calendar of 24 Grands Prix per season.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, called the agreement with Rwanda "a fundamental step for the future of the championship," emphasizing the determination to return to the African continent with a long-term commitment and a vision of concrete impact. (PRIMASPORT)
