TOKYO – Matteo Arnaldi has qualified for the second round of the Japan Open Tennis Championships (ATP 500) after defeating Rei Sakamoto in three sets on the hard courts of the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo.
The 25-year-old from Sanremo, currently number 37 in the ATP rankings, defeated the Japanese number 137, who entered the main draw thanks to a wild card, with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in over two hours of play.
In the second round, Arnaldi could cross paths with number one seed Carlos Alcaraz, who is expected to make his debut on Thursday against the American Michelsen.
