De Laurentiis rejects €2.2 billion offer to sell Napoli

Aurelio De Laurentiis

(PRIMASPORT) NAPLES Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed in an interview with Radio Kiss Kiss that he had received an offer of €2.2 billion from Matt Rizzetta, an Italian-American entrepreneur and president of the Napoli basketball team, to buy Napoli. The offer called for a split payment, with one portion upon signing and the remainder over three years, but with the condition that De Laurentiis would no longer manage the team.

De Laurentiis explained that he declined the offer because his role would gradually be reduced until he became merely honorary president. He emphasized his sense of responsibility to the city, the region, and the fans—approximately 83 million in the Western world—and asked for guarantees regarding the club's future and the work accomplished over the past 22 years.

He then added that, if he decided to sell, he would prefer to hand the company over to a Neapolitan rather than an American, as those who are local are more familiar with the local context and the people they interact with on a daily basis. (PRIMASPORT)
