Alexander Zverev is the new world number one after his victory in Vienna.

Zverev

(PRIMASPORT) VIENNA – Alexander Zverev has moved into first place in the ATP world rankings, surpassing Jannik Sinner. The 29-year-old German defeated Tallon Griekspoor in the round of 16 of the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna 6-4, 7-5 in about an hour and a half of play, thus mathematically reaching the top of the rankings as of Monday.

Zverev and Sinner both have 9,450 points, but the German leaps into the lead thanks to his greater number of Grand Slam titles won this season, with two trophies (Roland Garros and the US Open) to the Italian's one. Zverev thus becomes the thirtieth player in the history of the ATP rankings, introduced in 1973, to reach the number one position.

“"It's the best feeling in the world. I did it thanks to my team," Zverev commented after the match. "We've been together on the tour for 14 years, we've experienced so many moments, and they've always been there. This year has been very special, and it's even more wonderful to celebrate this milestone in Vienna, a city I love dearly.".

For Sinner, who had held the world lead for 95 weeks, his tenure at the top of world tennis has come to an end. (PRIMASPORT)
