AMSTERDAM – Ai World Championships of rowing to Amsterdam, gold has arrived for Italy. After the bronze obtained by Matteo Lodo and Giovanni Codato in the coxless pair, in the waters of the Bosbaan, it has imposed itself four of a kind formed by Luca Chiumento, Andrea Panizza, Luca Rambaldi e James Gentili. The Italian crew, Olympic runner-up at Paris 2024, confirmed their position on the top step of the world championship podium, which they reached at the end of September last year in Shanghai.
Chiumento, Panizza, Rambaldi and Gentili (photo Canottaggio.org/Julia Kowacic), returning from the best chrono Recorded in the heats (06:14.90) and the victory in the first semifinal (05:45.85), they got off to a good start in the water, although it was Germany that took the lead in the final after the first few strokes. At the 500 meters, the Germans were a second and a tenth ahead of Italy, who, at the 1000 meters, were only 0.75 behind Germany. At the 1300 meters, however, the Italians increased their pace, completing the overtaking of the Teutons (the Italian boat was just 0.75 ahead at the 1500 meters). The final moments of the race were thrilling, with the opponents trying in vain to close the gap while the Italian quartet crossed the finish line ahead of everyone with a final time of 05'33"60. The silver and bronze medals were taken respectively by Germany (05'34"46) and Great Britain (05'35"40) while the home idols of the Netherlands (fourth in 05'39"22) were the first to be excluded from the top 3 (source: agc)
