LONDON, 1 JULY 2026 – Jannik Sinner continues his run at Wimbledon 2026. The world number one defeated Portugal's Nuno Borges in three sets, 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 6-4, to secure a spot in the third round after two hours and 31 minutes of play. The Italian had to fight especially hard in the first two sets, both resolved in tie-breaks, before finally sealing the victory in the third set.
Two tie-breaks to direct the match
The first set remained perfectly balanced until 6-6. Sinner had three break points in the opening game, but Borges managed to save them. The set was decided in a tie-break, where the South Tyrolean took control, winning 7 points to 4.
The second set was more complicated. The Portuguese managed to break the Italian's serve, taking a break lead and, at 5-4, even had a set point. Sinner, however, canceled the opportunity, recovered from a break deficit, and once again pushed the set to a tie-break, dominating it 7-2.
Closing in the third set
In the third set, Sinner broke early, only to be immediately countered by Borges. The ATP world number one, however, capitalized on another setback from the Portuguese to secure a second consecutive break and definitively take control of the match.
The Italian closed at 6-4, despite Borges managing to cancel a match point before the final game.
Brooksby is in the third round
With this victory, Sinner advances to the third round of the London Slam, where he will face American Jenson Brooksby, who qualified thanks to a three-set victory over Peruvian Ignacio Buse.
The world number one thus continues his journey on the grass of Wimbledon, confirming himself as one of the main candidates to win the title.
