The match ended with the Italian national team taking the lead (Pio Esposito in the 11th minute), but the second half was a debacle, with four goals coming in the final quarter (Nusa, Haarland, Larsen). A 4-1 finish was so harsh that coach Gattuso apologized to the fans. Norway advances directly to the World Cup.
