ECUADOR The Ecuadorian Football Federation has announced that Marcelo Gallardo is the new coach of the Ecuador national football team, aiming to lead the team to the 2030 World Cup. The 50-year-old Argentine coach will be leading a national team for the first time after his success with River Plate, where he won 14 trophies, including two Copa Libertadores.
Gallardo replaces Sebastian Beccacece, who was relieved of his duties following the World Cup elimination by Mexico. Federation president Francisco Egas emphasized: "We chose Marcelo Gallardo not for his achievements, but for everything he represents. Welcome to Ecuador, Marcelo.".
Ecuador has established itself as one of the most competitive national teams in South America, qualifying for the 2026 World Cup with a second-place finish in their qualifying group behind Argentina. Piero Hincapie and Willian Pacho are among the team's key players.
