AMSTERDAM, 1 JULY 2026 –
Ronald Koeman has announced his resignation as coach of the Netherlands national team following their elimination in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup against Morocco. The coach announced his decision in a message posted on his social media channels, taking full responsibility for the outcome.
The Oranje were eliminated on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey. The Dutch took the lead through Cody Gakpo, before Issa Diop equalized in injury time. Misses from the spot by Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville proved decisive.
“The final responsibility is mine”
In the message announcing his departure, Koeman explained the reasons behind his choice.
«Last night, I made the decision to end my tenure as coach of the Dutch national team. We all shared the dream of making history at this World Cup, but we didn't achieve it. No one is more disappointed than me. As coach, the final responsibility lies with me.
The 63-year-old coach was in his second term as Netherlands coach, after a career that also saw him lead Barcelona, Southampton and Everton.
The reference to his wife's illness
Koeman also dedicated part of his message to the family's personal situation, recalling the illness of his wife Bartina, who was diagnosed with breast cancer.
«"The last few years have made me realize once again that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes.".
The federation condemns racist insults
Following their elimination from the World Cup, the Dutch Football Association also condemned the racist and discriminatory insults that appeared on social networks targeting some of their national team players.
In a statement, the federation reiterated that "football unites people, regardless of origin or background," stressing that racism and discrimination "have no place in football, online, or in our society.".
