(PRIMASPORT) CARDIFF The Italian Paralympic fencing team achieved significant results on day four of the 2026 European Paralympic Championships in Cardiff, winning one gold and two bronze medals. Edoardo Giordan became European champion in the men's saber category A, while Julia Markowska and Amelio Castro took third place in the women's épée category B and men's saber category B, respectively.

Giordan, a bronze medalist at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, won his first individual European gold medal after four previous appearances. He overcame notable opponents, including Greece's Ntounis and Ukraine's Artem Manko, before defeating Hungary's Richard Osvath 15-10 in the final. Also in the A category, Mattia Galvagno failed to reach the round of 16, finishing 14th.

Julia Markowska won bronze in the women's épée B category, her first individual medal at a European Championship, losing in the semifinals with a thrilling 15-14 defeat to Poland's Karolina Strawinska. Sofia Brunati finished 14th in the same category.

In the men's saber category B, Amelio Castro won bronze following the exclusion of his teammate Gianmarco Paolucci for a rules violation. Castro had won against Britain's Shah and lost in the quarterfinals to Coutya. Andrea Jacquier placed sixth, while Davide Costi finished 22nd.

The Italian team thus has a total of eight medals, including three golds, already surpassing the haul from the previous European Championships in Paris in 2024. The competitions will continue with the individual men's foil and women's saber events, which will feature several Italian athletes. (PRIMASPORT)
