MILAN – The world of Pavia and Italian football mourns the passing of Giuseppina Schiavo, known by all as Giusy Achilli, whose story marked an important chapter in sports management. The first woman to lead a professional soccer club in Italy, Pavia's president from 1989 to 1994, passed away in Milan at the age of 72.
Achilli took over as president of Pavia from her husband Claudio, with whom she later became the owner of Livorno. During her tenure, the Lombardy club produced players destined to leave their mark on Italian football, such as Massimiliano Allegri and Frederic Massara, who went on to play in Serie A in subsequent seasons.
Giusy Achilli, who has been ill for some time, leaves a significant legacy in the world of football, particularly for her pioneering role as a woman leading a men's professional club, demonstrating competence and passion in a traditionally male environment.
