BRNO (CZECH REPUBLIC), 31 AUGUST 2026 – The Italian women's volleyball team has reached the quarterfinals of the 2026 European Championships. Julio Velasco's Italian team defeated Bulgaria 3-0, with sets of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-13.
After five wins in the group stage in Gothenburg, the Italian volleyball team has secured its sixth consecutive victory in the competition. In the quarterfinals, they will face the winner of the round of 16 match between the Czech Republic and Sweden.
Egonu leads Italy in the first set
The match started evenly. Paola Egonu led the Italian attack, while Iva Dudova responded for Bulgaria.
The two teams remained close until 15-14. Marina Lubian, Sarah Fahr, and Ekaterina Antropova then helped the Italians make their first break.
Bulgaria managed to get back to 19-17, but Italy closed the set with a 6-1 run. The 25-18 scoreline handed the first set to Velasco's team.
Orro and Adigwe sign the extension
In the second set, Italy picked up the pace. Alessia Orro's serve put Bulgaria's reception in difficulty, allowing the Italians to take a 9-5 lead and then a 14-6 lead.
Velasco brought on Merit Adigwe in the final part of the set. The opposite hitter scored four points in quick succession, contributing to the 25-13 run that gave Italy a 2-0 lead.
Bulgaria failed to react in the third set. Antropova made an impact in attack and blocking, while Egonu and Fahr ensured continuity in the offensive phase.
Italy maintained a consistent lead and closed again at 25-13, completing the victory without conceding a set.
In the quarterfinals, one between Czechia and Sweden
The Italian women's team will return to the field on Wednesday, September 2nd in Brno. Their opponent will be the winner of the match between the Czech Republic and Sweden, both of which are hosting the finals.
The victory against Bulgaria confirms Italy's undefeated streak. Velasco's team topped their group in Gothenburg and began the knockout stage with a three-set victory.
