COVERCIANO – Both trained at Inter Milan, Francesco Pio and Sebastiano Esposito have been called up to the Italian national team under the guidance of coach Paolo Fornari for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The call-up represents a historic opportunity: if Sebastiano, the middle brother of the family, makes his debut, he will become the third Esposito to wear the Azzurri jersey, a record never achieved by a family in Italian football.
Francesco Pio, who has already scored five goals in nine appearances between qualifiers and friendlies, and Sebastiano, fresh from a significant goal in Sassuolo-Juventus, could play together in the same match. This scenario recalls the historic Inzaghi brothers, who played together for 11 minutes for the national team in 2000, the last time brothers played together.
Throughout the history of the Azzurri, many brothers have worn the national team jersey, but none have managed to bring three brothers onto the pitch. Furthermore, the Espositos are also aiming to equal another historic record: having both brothers score in the same match, a feat achieved only by the Cevenini in 1915.
