ALATRI – Over the weekend of September 26 and 27, the 16th edition of the Italian Cheese Throwing Cup took place in Alatri, a traditional sporting event organized by the Collelavena "I Ciclopi del Formaggio" sports club with the patronage of the Municipality of Alatri.
The competition, held on Via Frittola, saw athletes from various Italian regions, members of the FIGeST Italian Federation of Traditional Games and Sports, compete in various categories based on the weight of their cheeses—ranging from 3 to 22 kg. This ancient discipline, dating back to before the 15th century, originally a game between farmers and cheesemakers to test the ripening and firmness of the cheese.
Using a string wrapped around the form, the athletes apply a rotating motion that can send it flying for hundreds of meters, a technical feat requiring strength and precision. Thanks to the commitment of FIGeST and associations like ASD Collelavena, this tradition continues to be practiced and promoted.
