ROTTERDAM \u2013 After one hundred and thirteen years, Gabriele Targhetta, a gymnast from the Fiamme Oro, has brought Italy back to the world podium in an event that seemed to belong only to the history books. The Italian State Police athlete is the new world vice-champion on the pommel horse. A silver medal that is worth gold for Italian gymnastics, earned in the individual event finals of the 2026 World Championships in Rotterdam.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the Ahoy Arena, before the eyes of FGI President Andrea Facci and Nicola Bartolini, who had come to the Netherlands specifically to support the Azzurri, Targhetta wrote a chapter destined to remain in the memory of Italian sport. Bartolini, world floor champion in Kitakyushu in 2021, was the last Italian gymnast to stand on a world championship podium. Five years later, the baton has been passed to the young specialist from Veneto, who completes an extraordinary season, which began with victories in the World Cup, continued with the European title in Zagreb, and culminated with this world silver medal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Targhetta's 15.233, built on a difficulty of 5.900 and a 9.333 execution, only partially reflects the quality of an impeccable performance, delivered in a final eight in which none of the eight competitors committed any decisive errors. It was a high-level challenge, built on clean movements, rhythm, and infinitesimal differences. The world title went to Armenian Hamlet Manukyan, who performed a routine rated 15.300, just 0.67 seconds faster than the Monza-born athlete from Veneto, who grew up in Mestre. Another Armenian, Mamikon Khachatryan, took third place, taking bronze with 15.000.<\/span><\/p>\n

Targhetta, third in qualifying with a score of 14.833, raised his game even further at the most crucial moment, improving by four tenths, achieving a personal best of his young career and demonstrating impressive competitive maturity. For Italy, this is a medal of enormous historical significance. Indeed, we have to go back to the 1913 World Championships in Paris to find one of our fellow countrymen on the world podium in the equestrian arena. Giorgio Zampori and Osvaldo Palazzi won gold and silver, respectively, then.
