MotoGP bids farewell to the iconic Phillip Island circuit without holding the Australian Grand Prix, which, like the rest of Sunday's schedule, was canceled for safety reasons. Weather conditions were to blame, but not the rain or track conditions. Low-lying clouds were the deciding factor, preventing the medical helicopter from providing the necessary connections between the nearest hospital and a track beloved by all, yet isolated from major cities. Like Adelaide, the race's next venue starting next season.

It was clear from the Australian morning, when it was still late Saturday evening in Italy, that the day would be complex: clouds and rain had cancelled the MotoGP warm-up, while in the following hours, first Moto3 and then Moto2 were dropped from the daily schedule. Instead, desperate, last-minute efforts were being made to save the main race, originally scheduled for 4:00 AM Italian time (but in the first night of daylight saving time, which until the previous day coincided with 5:00 AM). However, even if the rain did ease, the low clouds still prevented the visibility and safety needed for racing. "The helicopter cannot take off, and for that to happen, a window of about 60 minutes between Melbourne and Phillip Island is required for the race to start. At some circuits, we can use the road with ambulances if necessary, but here we have to rely on the helicopter because the distance to the nearest hospital is more than 45 minutes," explained race director Graham Webber.

Phillip Island thus leaves MotoGP after 29 races and misses out on what would have been its thirtieth. This situation also allows Jorge Martin to maintain his 10-point gap to Marc Marquez in the standings, with hopes of a prodigious recovery in time for Sepang that would allow him to cling to his championship hopes. The Catalan Ducati rider himself said goodbye to the historic venue of the Australian Grand Prix since 1997: "Phillip Island didn't deserve a finale like this; it deserved this last race and not a cancellation. Especially since the track conditions would have allowed us to race, but unfortunately safety is paramount, and the helicopter couldn't make it here. We're truly disappointed; as riders, we were ready to race and get out on the track. Alas, we didn't make it. Thanks to everyone who supports MotoGP." The various riders at least treated the crowd, gathered in the stands for the last time, to two parade laps, followed by smiles, autographs, and photographs. Fabio Di Giannantonio admitted he even shed a tear at this farewell, while Pecco Bagnaia stated: "It's a shame for everyone; racing here has always been wonderful. It's a shame we're back for the last time at exactly the wrong time. As we saw yesterday, the races held here are always unique and provide wonderful, intense battles. It's a true circuit; everyone will miss it.".

PHILLIP ISLAND – Una lunghissima attesa, prolungata peraltro dal cambio dell’ora, che produce alla fine un tristissimo nulla di fatto.
