In Japan, Italian women's foil made history. At the first World Cup event of the season, held in Takamatsu, the women's foil podium was entirely Italian. It was a sensational start for Simone Vanni's national team, which had only one previous appearance, a very recent one, also involving women foils, at the April 2024 event in Tbilisi.
A team domination, highlighted by the gold medal won by Martina Favaretto, the reigning world champion who, less than three months after her world championship triumph in Hong Kong, once again played the Mameli Anthem in Asia, singing it alongside her teammates Martina Batini, whom she defeated 15-13 in a hard-fought final, and third-place finishers Arianna Errigo and Alice Volpi, who added to their respective records, confirming their position as the two active foil fencers with the most World Cup podium finishes.
Martina Favaretto made her main draw debut with a 15-9 victory over Russia's Adelina Zagidullina. In the round of 32, the 24-year-old from Veneto, playing for the Fiamme Oro, defeated Poland's Amelia Olszewska 15-8, before facing off in the round of 16 against an excellent Carlotta Ferrari, who defeated the reigning world champion 15-12. In the quarterfinals, Favaretto dominated her match against Japan's Yuzuha Takeyama, defeating her 15-6 to secure a medal.
Meanwhile, Martina Batini's journey began with a 15-9 victory over Canadian Yunjia Zhang, followed by a 15-7 victory over American Zander Rhodes. In the round of 16, the Carabinieri player from Tuscany defeated Japan's Sumire Tsuji by the same scoreline, 15-7, thus securing a spot in the quarterfinals, where she defeated American Carolina Stutchbury 15-9, securing a spot on the podium.
In the "middle" section of the draw, Arianna Errigo's latest medal-winning run began with a 15-5 victory over Japan's Rino Nagase. The Carabinieri player from Lombardy continued her run with a 15-6 victory over Aurora Grandis in the round of 32, before defeating Ukraine's Olga Sopit 15-7 in the round of 16. A 15-11 victory over Canada's Eleanor Harvey finally sealed her spot in the semifinals, with a comeback victory that was Arianna's hallmark.
Alice Volpi was no exception: her great return to the podium began with a 15-11 victory over American Chloe Sun. The Siena native of the Fiamme Oro then defeated China's Siqi Zhang 15-4 in the 32-man draw, before prevailing 15-5 over France's Ysaora Thibus in the round of 16. In the match that guaranteed a spot in the top four, Volpi defeated Japan's Yuka Ueno 15-13, thus reaching the medal round.
At that point, the Takamatsu World Cup semifinals lineup took on the appearance of an Italian Senior Championship. In the first derby, Martina Batini secured her spot in the final, beating Arianna Errigo 15-6, vaulting her to third place, her 64th individual medal at the world championships. In the second semifinal, Martina Favaretto prevailed 15-8 over Alice Volpi, securing the bronze medal for the Siena native, making it her 30th World Cup podium.
The final pitted the two Martinas, world number 1 and world number 2, against each other: it was a vibrant, evenly matched match, which Favaretto managed to win with a score of 15-13, winning her first match as the reigning world champion, with Batini taking second place (her 22nd career finish on the circuit). This was Martina Favaretto's 20th World Cup medal, coming on the day of her 12th victory. Not bad numbers.
This marked the second all-Italian podium in the history of Italian fencing, following the one in April 2024, when Alice Volpi won the World Cup in Tbilisi ahead of Arianna Errigo, and Martina Favaretto and Anna Cristino finished third.
As for the other Italian athletes competing today in Japan, Anna Cristino, who finished 9th, and Carlotta Ferrari, who finished 12th, both lost their races just shy of the "final eight." The other Italian athletes also finished 23rd: Aurora Grandis, 27th Matilde Molinari, 37th Irene Bertini, 40th Francesca Palumbo, and 62nd Martina Sinigalia.
The men's event, however, lacked a breakthrough, won by the Czech Republic's reigning world champion Alexander Choupenitch. The best Italian foil fencers in Japan were Tommaso Martini and Giulio Lombardi, who dropped to the round of 16, finishing ninth and 13th, respectively. Out Filippo Macchi (17th), Lorenzo Nista (25th), and Edoardo Luperi (28th) finished in the round of 32. Following them were Guillaume Bianchi (33rd), Tommaso Marini (37th), and Alessio Foconi (45th).

TAKAMATSU – Il trionfo di Martina Favaretto, l’argento di Martina Batini e le medaglie di bronzo di Arianna Errigo e Alice Volpi.
